YOUNG JOURNALIST ASSOCIATION OF KASHMIR HOLD MEETING ON THE EVE OF WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

Srinagar 03 May (Only Kashmir): World Press Freedom day is an important event for world of journalism. The United Nations General Assembly declared 3 May to be World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and marking the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in 1991.
UNESCO marks World Press Freedom Day by conferring the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize on a deserving individual, organization or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger. Created in 1997, the prize is awarded on the recommendation of an independent jury of 14 news professionals. Names are submitted by regional and international non-governmental organizations working for press freedom, and by UNESCO member states.
On the eve of world press day 2012, Jammu & Kashmir Young Journalists Association (JKYJA) held an important meeting at its office .The meeting was attended by Muhammad Tauseef Mir- Secretary General (Associate-Editor Kashmir Media Watch).Bilal Furqani: Vice-President (senior correspondent (Srinagar), Kashmir News Service).Rameez Makhdoomi: Chief Spokesperson (Executive Editor Kashmir Scenario).Organizer: Majid Kapra (Srinagar correspondent Kashmir Image). Treasurer: Bilal Bashir Bhat (Editor in Chief: Only Kashmir). Publicity In charge: Kaiser Ahmad Mir (Associate Editor Kashmir Impact).Legal Advisor: Z A Quershi (Senior Advocate J& K High Court. Besides several other members, wherein the members apart from discussing various issues related to their profession also vowed to maintain the highest standards of journalism while rendering their professional duties. Moreover, the members raised their concerns over the depletion and contamination of the field of journalism especially in Kashmir and appealed the fellow community for a stop to yellow and paid news journalism and called for a fair, impartial and true journalism instead. In his concluding remarks Mr. War also appealed his fellow members to help him chart out a plan of campaign against the partial journalism and hike of vices in the field of journalism especially in the form of paid news.
On the occasion, the President JKYJA stated that power of media is increasing with every passing day but expressed concern that the lack of freedom of expression is marring the functioning of media in our part of the world. Ajaz Ahmad War, President JKYJA Stated -”Media has key role to play in the overall functioning of a democratic system, but the manner in which freedom of press has been scutulled in the state over the past few decades is a cause of concern”.
