DEATH DANCE IN LIDDER VALLEY, PAHALGAAM
Youth rescued from turbulent waters after almost 12 hours.
Pahalgaam, June 14 (Only Kashmir): Eight persons included two children and one woman lost their life when three vehicles skidded off the road and got trapped in the turbulent waters of Lidder Nalla at Nunwan, Pahalgam. One youth was rescued after 12 hours of sustained joint rescue operation by Police, Fire Services, Army, CRPF, Indian Airforce District Administration Anantnag, Kashmir White Water Rafting Association and locals. Search is continuing to trace Five more missing.
In the intervening night of 12th / 13th June 2011, three private vehicles No: DL 4CF 0935 (Ford Siesta) and JK01G-4477 (Maruti 800) skidded off the road near Nunwan due to heavy ran and poor visibility while on way from Srinagar to Pahalgam. All the vehicles got trapped in the turbulent Lidder Nalla and due to heavy rainfall they got washed away. Joint rescue operation was started immediately by Police and Fire Services personnel. Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon sought the help of Army and CRPF to assist the rescue operation. Indian Airforce was also requisitioned for chopper. Four passengers of the Maruti 800 got washed away immediately. However Sajad Ahmed Lanker S/o Abdul Rasheed Lanker R/o Khankah Mohalla, Srinagar who was travelling in the Ford Siesta managed to reach the roof top of his vehicle and shouted for help. His associate Yasir Farooq S/o Farooq Ahmed R/o Khankah Mohalla got washed away. The rescue workers led by SDPO Munir Ahmed tried their level best to retrieve the trapped person, but due to nightfall, combined with heavy rain down pour and the turbulence of the nalla their repeated attempts failed. The rescue operation continued throughout the night till morning till the Bronto Skylift and Advance Rescue Tender of Fire Services were specially deployed for assisting in the rescue. Despite great difficulties the fire service personnel headed by Deputy Director Fire Services Mohammed Ashraf alongwith firemen Nazir Ahmed (no: 421), Khurshid Ahmed, Bronto Driver Ichpal Singh, Zaffar operator, ART operator Syed Ahmed managed to rescue Sajad Ahmed after being trapped on the roof of his trapped vehicle for almost 12 hours. The firemen risked their own lives to save Sajad. Div Com Kashmir has announced that they will be suitably rewarded and awarded. Sajad was immediately referred to SKIMS Soura where he is recouping
Later, with the efforts of locals, Police, Fire Services, Army, CRPF and District Administration the dead bodies of Yasir Farooq S/o Farooq Ahmed R/o Khankah Mohalla and Mudasir Ahmed Shah S/o Abdul Rasheed Shah R/o Habak were recovered almost three kolimetrs downstream. Rafting boats of Ishfaq Ahmed Khan S/o Nazir Ahmed Khan R/o Panthachowk Proprietor of Kashmir White Water Rafting Association were utilized for the rescue operation. Div Com has appreciated the gesture of Ishfaq in providing his Rafting boats free of cost for the rescue operation. Till reports were last received the rescuers were still searching for the bodies of Shoukat Ahmed Aram S/o Ghulam Rasool Aram R/o Mahraj Gunj and four other unidentified persons.
