RECORD NUMBER OF PILGRIMS VISIT VAISHNODEVI IN J&K in 2010
Jammu Jan 02 (Only Kashmir): Over 87.5 lakh devotees have visited the Vaishnodevi shrine located at Trikuta hills in Jammu and Kashmir in 2010, the highest in the past two decades.
"The pilgrimage to Mata Vaishnodevi has set a new milestone in 2010 with a record number of 87,49,326 lakh pilgrims visiting the cave shrine. The number has broken the previous record of 82,34,896 in 2009," Additional Chief Executive Officer of Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Shrine Board Mandeep K Bandari told PTI.
"SMVSB is expecting one crore pilgrims in the next few years," he said.
In 2008, as many as 67,92,223 pilgrims visited the shrine, while it was 74.17 lakh in 2007 and 69.5 lakh in 2006.
Vaishnodevi is the second busiest shrine after Tirupati. The number of pilgrims rose from three lakh in 1970 to 52 lakh in 2000.
Traffic to the holy cave increased by nearly 10 lakh in just one year-- from 21.69 lakh in 1990 to 31.16 lakh in 1991.
