MUNICIPAL POLLS TO BE HOLD IN APRIL
Srinagar, Feb 8 (Only Kashmir): State Cabinet which met here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah in Jammu on Wednesday gave approval to the agenda of holding municipal elections in the state from April.
They said notifications for the polls would be issued soon. “The arrangements for holding municipal elections and the schedule of the polls were finalized in the meeting,” they added.
The elections would be held on party basis. “Number of the seats have been increased from 68 to 75 in Srinagar, whereas in Jammu the number has been increased to 75 from 72. Population in both the cities has increased in the last few years. So seats had to be enhanced accordingly,” sources added.
Pertinently, last municipal elections were held during the tenure of former Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed’s PDP-Congress alliance government in 2005.
The cabinet also gave approval to the address of the Governor, N N Vohra to be delivered on February 23 in both houses of the State Assembly. (OK)
