UNCONDITIONAL DIALOUGE IN KASHMIR: MEHBOOBA

Jammu Sep 15: Jammu and Kashmir's Opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to announce an unconditional dialogue in Kashmir to resolve the situation in the disturbed State. 'We appeal to the prime minister to go for unconditional dialogue,' PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti told in an all-party meeting on Kashmir that lasted for more than five hours on Wednesday.

“This meeting is taking place a few months too late and against the backdrop of an unprecedented crisis faced by our state. But it is a matter of some satisfaction that the entire political class of the country has at least now got together to take note of a great tragedy that has unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir,” she mentioned. It is a political problem that is not beyond the political genius of our times. Only that the response has not to be a hundred or thousand dead bodies too late. The more we delay it the more it gets complex and painful. Neither has the wheel to be invented afresh every time the people of the state cry for attention.
The only fundamental requirement is to recognize the existence of a problem that concerns a large mass of people and give up the usual make believe attitude that it will go away without solving it. Instead of responding to events, which too is done now unfortunately very reluctantly, we will have to start a process that is uninterruptedly focused on resolution. The problem has both external and internal dimensions and the leadership at the national level has recognised it be it the UPA or NDA even if we talk only in contemporary terms.
'But the government should release the youth arrested under the Public Safety Act... The curfew, which Kashmiris have been suffering under, should also be lifted,' said Mufti. On the issue of repealing the contentious Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), she said: 'We should definitely have something real and concrete, not something which is cosmetic.'
